I chose to be a mother, even when I discovered that pregnancy made me very sick. Seven times. I was blessed with five children. But it isn’t the number of children you have, it’s what you do as a woman that is motherly.

We have different callings, and some women become mothers in other ways than through the birthing process. It’s what you do as a woman. You don’t have to be a mother and a great career woman like Marisa Mayer to be successful, even though the media will tell you that (and sometimes I still feel that conflict.)

Life is full of struggles and disappointments, and we experience a wilderness of affliction at some time in our life. That’s the test. And it isn’t meant to be easy. But that’s what brings you the most joy. Through the struggles and exhaustion. Be happy. Enjoy being a mother. Appreciate your contributions. Happy Mother’s Day everyday.

One of my favorite tributes to mothers is sung by Alex Boye — A Relief Society Tribute:

mothers, 1950s
1955 My mom keeps an eye on me. (and her younger brother, who she mothered when her mom died 6 months after giving birth.)
