Homemade Coconut Oil Deodorant

Back to the kitchen cupboard and I’m not mother Hubbard, but I made my own deodorant with coconut oil and baking soda. I’ve used this recipe for a year and it works great for me — no rash or sting or stink. No chemicals too. It’s got to be better for you. Let’s take a look at the two ingredients–   Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory, antipyretic (anti-itch) and an analgesic (anti-pain)(Ref). Another benefit — coconut oil is anti-bacterial(Ref). Since bacteria causes the problem that deodorant is trying to prevent, natural coconut oil is a good choice. This is super easy, no mess....

Homemade Beeswax Body Balm

I love this recipe. You make it in a Mason jar, and there’s no mess. Someone asked me for a body butter without  without coconut oil, so I came up with this one.  It’s made with beeswax, olive oil, and avocado oil. I also used walnut oil this time, but you can use almond oil or just more avocado oil.  Actually, you can try any edible oil in this recipe.  It has more of an oily feel when you first smooth it onto your skin, but it absorbs quickly, leaving your skin soft and scented. If you want to...

Homemade Anti-Fungal Cream

My husband has nightmares of his childhood undiagnosed itchy skin problems that were so severe on his feet that he couldn’t wear shoes. I think he had to wear socks and sandals to his “grammar school” and go home and soak his feet at lunchtime. He finally got better when he spent a week at Lake Elsinore in California and ran around barefoot. I don’t think they ever determined if it was athletes foot gone amuck or what. But that lake held magical properties. Now, he is always careful to treat every little itchy skin patch. But going to...

Homemade Beeswax Body Butter

Word around the family is that I used to make lotions and potions. True. I dug out my old herbal books and did some research for a homemade beeswax body butter. I even had some coconut oil and beeswax in my stash of goods. Guess what? Beeswax has an incredibly long shelf life (25 years.) So here is one of my first tries in this decade and it was so easy and so delectable. Can I say that about something you don’t eat? This is a thick body butter that feels oily (buttery) when you first put it on your skin, but...

Blonde Highlights and Lowlights

I’m a blonde and you know the saying, blondes have more fun. My daughter does my hair — blonde highlights and lowlights are a must for a natural blonde. I don’t want to look all bleached-out like my 1980’s hair. It has to look natural, like when I was a kid, especially in my 50’s — oh my gosh , did I say that? I am sooo glad I am not paying cash for my day at the hairdresser — just babysit my yummy grandkids. Its a match made in heaven. So for the weave, the low lights — first...

Lowlights and highlights for blondes

If I don’t get to my hairdresser soon enough, I start to wield the scissors and the hair color. I drove south, 7 hours to visit my daughter, who happens to be my hairdresser too. I always confess my sins with the scissors and she always absolves them and fixes it. I am pretty good at touching up my root color; she has taught me well. The back is a little tricky though. Last time, I had my daughter-in-law do it for me — her first time. She did a great job. (she is a detail person) But eventually...

“Though matter is replaced through an endless cycle of creations and dissolution, only spirit retains conscious identity, so that strictly speaking “only progeny is immortal,” each “mounting up from world to world” acquiring ever more “treasure” while “progressing towards His perfection which awaits them all.” (Nibley, Treasures in the Heavens)
