I love this film, Doris does a great job playing a mom of four boys. I have four boys (and 1 daughter), so maybe that’s why I appreciate the humor. Doris holds her own when a femme fatale starts moving in on husband, David Niven.

“Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” is a 1960 comedy film starring Doris Day and David Niven. The story is about a New York theater critic, his wife and four boys who move to the country, leaving dear old dad to commute to the city. Doris Day’s real life husband, Marty Melcher, was one of the producers, which could be why the title is a little goofy. There is a song that Doris sings with the title in the movie.

One of my favorite scenes is when they go to enroll the boys in the public school out in the country. The principal asks for Mrs. MacKay (Doris) to volunteer, and then turns to Mr. MacKay (Niven) to do the same. The principal says to David Niven and Doris Day (the parents) “it’s our policy to draw school and home closer together, therefore we ask our parents to volunteer for at least one school activity”

Doris agrees to supervise an after school activity, but when the principal turns to David Niven he totally embarrasses Doris–

“No, I’m sorry I don’t think I’m going to volunteer…in my opinion, elementary schooling… the main purpose of it is to keep the children out of the parent’s hair and vice versa. Those hours when the kids are at school, have for generations been held sacred to American parents. That is when they are free. And I don’t have the faintest intention of giving up that freedom.”
