The Nursery–a special room for the baby–a place where babies and young children go.  If you’re a Mormon it’s the place where young kids go–aged 18 months to three years–for two hours of the three hour block of church meetings on Sunday.

It can be either your favorite calling or your dreaded calling. You either love to put your kids in the nursery or you hate to put them in there. The kids either love it or they cry.

I have spent some time in the nursery. When I was pregnant I would sneak in there after Sacrament meeting with one of my kids and eat half a sandwich to quell my nausea. I had to eat every two hours or I became deathly ill, it was a vicious cycle if it got started.

I would sometimes take my hesitant child in and stay with him while he played with the toys; and then we would leave after they put the toys away and made the kids all sit still for a lesson. Sometimes we would stay for a snack. And sometimes I would see a cold in there and leave.

My kids never liked the nursery and I never liked the nursery because my kids were always sick on Tuesday morning after being in the nursery on Sunday. And by the time we passed that cold around the family, my self included, we usually had a one day reprieve and then someone would drop off their kids in the nursery, say “oh my child is kind of fussy, but she’s just teething” Or that runny nose there?–yea that’s teething. I don’t think so. It sure is contagious.

My daughter has two little girls, a two year old who loves the nursery and a 5 month old. She and her hubby got called to the nursery. Daddy ended up going alone yesterday and the girls stayed home sick with mommy. Auntie Emmy was there visiting for the holidays and she asked my cute little granddaughter what she does in The Nursery. She said, “oh, I play with my friends, have snacks, sing songs and I learned there are germs.”
