Do trees celebrate?

Because just after we signed our docs, my Chinese Wisteria started sending out fireworks by popping its pods.

It was amazing.

I walked out on our front lawn and could hear all this popping sound going on, and seeds flying from the tree/vine onto the ground. And some distance too. In all these years, I’ve never seen the “explosive dispersal” of propagation that occurs in the Fall after seedpods have become brown.

In the early Spring, there are magnificent violet flowers that hang over the rooftop, and then during the summer, seed pods begin to develop. The pods become dry, and with a little warm day in the Fall, they explode open.

“As a pod dries, tensions are set up in the wall of the pod eventually causing it to split along two lines of weakness. As the two halves curl back, suddenly released like a tense spring, they flick out the seeds inside in an explosive manner. ”(British Wildlife)

It was so spectacular that my neighbor came over and listened as well, her young daughter picking up the seeds to save and plant.

The popping celebration lasted for hours. And I felt a bit like the collector (Everything is Illuminated)  going around and saving the pods and seeds for later… and for memories.

I felt to be thankful for the years in this house, and now for the sale which allows me to go on (and pay off some debt).

I felt a little sad too, to be leaving a good neighborhood of 12 years, and my life here in Irvine of 30 years.  I had chosen well to live and raise my kids here.

I felt the tree was a little sad too. And I felt to weep as well.

You know living things have a spirit? I just re-read the genesis account in several sources–The Bible, The Lost Books of Adam and Eve, The Pearl of Great Price– (homeschool studies of the great books starts with the beginning of time this year).

And I was impressed that “every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. ”  was a spirit.  “For I the Lord God, created all things of which I have spoken spiritually before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth .” (Moses 3:5) (Genesis 2:5)

Some things are just miracles and the hand of God in my life.

And yet some things are so logical. God prepared the earth to bring forth vegetation by what science calls science.  By bringing forth seed and then the mists of rain. (no hocus-pocus, creation out-of-nothing, here)(creatio ex nihilo)

“And the Gods organized the earth to bring forth grass from its own seed, and the herb to bring forth herb from its own seed…” (Abraham 4: 12)

“When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-” (Genesis 2:4-7, NIV)

Life is a process, but miraculous as well.
